Are you considering a switch to a Paleo diet? This diet focuses on meat, veggies, and fruits, leading from consumption of the habits of people who lived within the Paleolithic era. Whether you are doing this for the health benefits or to lose weight, it is important to note the pros and cons of the system, especially when it comes to your oral health.

Benefits of a Paleo Diet on Oral Health

There are a variety of great benefits to a Paleo diet when it comes to your oral health:

• Vitamin C. Found in citrus and other fruits and veggies, vitamin C is important for healthy gums.
• Potassium. Bones, including those that make up your jaw to hold your teeth in place, love potassium, and it is found in high quantities in bananas.
• Fiber. Fruits and vegetables are great sources of fiber, and fiber benefits your mouth by scrubbing debris and plaque off of your teeth. Celery is an especially great option.
• Vitamin B-12. This vitamin is found in fish and lean meats, and it is important for healthy gum tissue.

Oral Health Concerns with a Paleo Diet

When it comes to the health of your teeth, following a Paleo diet also has a few problems:

• No dairy. You won’t be consuming any milk, cheese, or yogurt with this diet, so you’ll be missing out on the calcium that is needed to keep your teeth strong and healthy.
• Excess acid. With so many fresh fruits in your diet, you’ll be getting a lot of acid on your teeth. This isn’t good for your enamel, so make sure that you are rinsing your mouth out frequently. You can also choose fruits that are less acidic than some of the major culprits, and you should be sure to limit your juice consumption.

If you are going to be starting a new diet, make sure to first talk to your physician and dentist to make sure the diet is a good option for your entire body.
