You know, sometimes at Palani Center for Dental Implants we just get so wrapped up in talking about teeth that we forget to show the gums some love! Gums are arguably just as important as your teeth in your overall oral health, and should be taken care of on a regular basis. So what is it that makes gums great?

The Gums are Just as Important

Teeth do all the work right? Wrong! Yes, teeth do most of the work of actually chewing your food, but what do you suppose allows your teeth to do this? The gums support the teeth both structurally and by keeping them safe. When healthy gums support your teeth, your teeth are less likely to receive damage while chewing and will remain healthy and happy.

Keeping Gums Healthy is Key to Oral Health

Gums fit around the base of your teeth like a turtleneck sweater fits around your neck – snugly. By forming a nice seal around the base of your teeth the gums help to keep out harmful bacteria and food particles from the base of teeth.

People don’t realize this, but enamel is what keeps teeth safe from things like harmful bacteria in your mouth. Enamel doesn’t exist below the gum line, it’s only present on the crown of the tooth. The gums protect the root of your teeth from all the harmful things that it can’t protect itself from.

What Do Healthy Gums Look Like

Healthy gums are pink and soft. Healthy gums don’t bleed when brushed or flossed. Unhealthy gums will appear red and swollen and will often bleed easily. If you believe that your gums could be doing better feel free to give us a call at (310) 894-8337 and schedule an appointment.
