Your smile says a lot about you, so when your teeth are stained and discolored, you’ll be giving off an impression to others that you might not be happy with. Unfortunately, this can be harmful to your self-esteem, as you could feel self-conscious.

In fact, a study completed by Crest in 2007 even found that stained teeth led to confidence problems in both professional and social situations.

About the Study

This Crest study examined over 1,000 adults who were surveyed about personal appearance and teeth stains. A majority of the participants believed that personal appearance, including white teeth were important for both professional and financial success.

This impact can extend to poor confidence in dating situations, as well, as the study collected impressions of people in first dates before and after the stains on their teeth were whitened. With first dates, nearly 60% of participants were seen as being more outgoing by potential love interests after they had the stains removed from their teeth.

Teens and Stained Teeth

Unfortunately, these self-esteem issues were even worse for teenagers, as most adolescents face confidence challenges to begin with. A study fund in Health and Social Care in the Community interviewed a group of 23 Brazilian teens who had stains resulting from fluorosis.

These teens reported that they were afraid of smiling because of the stains on their teeth. Mostly, they thought that other people would think that their stains were a result of poor brushing and flossing rather than the actual excessive fluoride consumption cause.

Fortunately, there are a variety of whitening products out there that can help you with your teeth stains if you are suffering from self-esteem issues. Some can be purchased over the counter, but if you are looking for more effective treatment methods, the best thing that you can do is contact our office.
