A good portion of the population is afraid of going to the dentist. That fear can be so strong that it actually keeps people from seeking dental care, even when they are miserable and desperately need it.

Instead of expecting the patients to go the extra mile and face their fears, dentists are now going out of their ways to make their patients feel more comfortable about coming in and getting dental care.

What Dentists Are Trying to Do to Help

There are a lot of changes coming in many dental offices. They are changing the appearance of the office as a start, so as patients come in, they are enveloped by a serene environment. They are adding relaxing music and scents to some offices to further the effect.

Giving additional distraction options also helps many patients, so dentists are implementing more things to help keep the attention of their parents. Some dentists are putting in sound systems and headsets, while others are offering fun video games.

Many dentists are also expanding their sedation options to be able to accommodate even the most fearful of patients. Instead of only having laughing gas, they are now offering things like IV sedation and oral sedation to help take the edge off of the anxiety.

If you have a fear of the dentist, know that you are not the only one trying to help you overcome it. Call your dentist and see how they approach a fearful patient.

Some dentists cater to patients that have fears more than others, so if you do not hear things that make you feel more at ease, call around until you find a dentist that sounds like you would feel comfortable seeing. It is your teeth, so make sure they are getting the care they need.
